How Tile Calculation Works

The calculator first multiplies the length and width of your project area to determine the total surface area.

It then calculates the area of one tile and divides the project area by the tile area to estimate how many tiles are required before waste.

Your selected waste allowance is then added to the estimate, and the result is rounded up to a whole tile so that you have enough tiles to cover the calculated area.

How Much Extra Tile Should I Buy?

Extra tiles are useful because some tiles may need to be cut during installation, and others may be damaged or broken. Keeping spare tiles can also be helpful for future repairs.

Tile Calculator Example

Imagine you are tiling an area that is 4 metres long and 3 metres wide. The total surface area is 12 square metres.

If each tile measures 60 cm × 60 cm, one tile covers 0.36 square metres. Dividing the surface area by the tile area gives an initial estimate of 34 tiles after rounding up.

With a 10% waste allowance, the calculator recommends 37 tiles. If the tiles are sold in boxes of four, you would need 10 boxes, giving you 40 tiles in total.
